John Pauls asked:

Have you ever known how skateboarding came to be a sport? The history of it is quite interesting. It started out in the 1950’s and many believed it would just be one more passing fad that people took part in. While it has had peaks and valleys since its introduction, skateboarding has proven it is much more than just a passing fad.

The first skateboard was quite different from today’s skateboard. They offered a handle bar on them, just like many types of scooters that we see on the market today. This handle bar is what allowed these early skateboards to be maneuvered and controlled. However, it didn’t take long for the idea to remove the handle bar to come along. Many believe this early idea was the result of the popularity of surf boarding at the time.

By the 1960’s, the most popular one was the Roller Derby Skateboard. It was actually introduced in 1959 just ahead of the competitors. However, it took many of these companies to keep up with the demand for them. It is estimated that between 1960 and 1963 more than 50 million skateboards were sold. Keep in mind that we didn’t have the technology that we have today in order to mass produce such items in large buildings.

When the skateboarding official contests were started by manufacturers in 1963 it only further fueled the frenzy to have one. So what happened that slowed down the craze for skateboards? There are two main reasons that cause the sales down. First, the economic status of the United States began to slow down so people weren’t able to buy as many extras as before. Second, many so called experts out there were talking about how unsafe skateboards were.

However, there were plenty of people that were taking a new interest in skateboards by the early 1970’s. This was due to the introduction of a variety of great moves and tricks. This added a new dimension to skateboarding that hadn’t been there in the past. Now there was much more involved with it all than just simply riding a skateboard. Many of the top competitors out there took things to the extremes and continued to push the limits.

In 1974 a huge change too place regarding the size of the skateboards. Up to this point the standard was either 6 or 7 inches in width. It now became 9 inches which consumers were very pleased with. These additional few inches offered riders more stability and that meant it was easier for them to control regardless of what they liked to do on their skateboard.

The availability of ramps and other materials that skaters could use at home in the 1980’s kept the trend of skateboarding going strong. Now people didn’t have to rely upon just skate parks for them to enjoy. However, you also had an abundance of city ordinances around this same time. Many of them prohibited the use of skateboards on public sidewalks and streets.

As a result, the sales did dip into the 1990’s. Yet once again the idea of skateboarding was thriving. Many believe it had to do with the availability of the internet. People could view plenty of skateboarding action online. At the same time the sporting channel ESPN took on this sport as well.

One thing is for sure, skateboarding has enough of a following that it is here to stay. It is fun to look back at where it has been though over the years. What is also exciting is to speculate about what the future holds for the sport of skateboarding. With the worldwide presence it has, there is always plenty going on concerning it.

Chris Mcguire asked:

Since skateboarding is nowadays much more than just a fun sport, riders need to have proper balance and control while skateboarding so that they have a safe ride. To have better control on the board when riding you need to have a better grip, which to a great extent can be availed with skateboarding shoes that are specially designed to provide proper ankle support to keep you from rolling, twisting or springing your ankle. The grip on the board provided by skateboarding shoes is often not firm enough. In such cases, you need to buy skateboard grip tape and stick it on your board to have more grip, as a grip tape has an adhesive back that sticks to the board and the top is rough so that you can hold on steadily to the board, when skateboarding. Usually skateboards have wooden decks which have smooth surfaces, and even if the board is made of fiber glass, carbon fiber, plastic, etc. the grip on these boards is not as firm as experienced with grip tape on the board.

Depending upon the design of your board you can either buy skateboard grip tape that allows you to show the design of your board or you can also buy a large size grip tape and cut it accordingly, so that the area of board where you keep your feet when riding can be covered with grip tape and the graphics of your board remains visible too. This is very easily and comfortably done. Not only is it easy to stick grip tape on a new board, but it is equally easy to replace your old one. Yes, due to regular wear and tear, it will be required to change the grip tape on your skateboard. Having done this a couple of times, will make you an expert in changing the grip tapes and now To buy skateboard grip tape you can rely upon online availabilities where you can find countless styles and designs of grip tape to choose from. According to your budget, size and design of the skateboard you can buy the best suitable grip tape. Before making payments through credit cards, make sure of the credentials regarding the company, as these days many fraudulent companies offer skateboard grip tapes and other parts of skateboard as well. Make sure that the online shop is reputed and offers confidentiality regarding payments.

Skateboard grip tapes are available in different prices amongst which you can even buy skateboard grip tape that proves to be comparatively cheaper, however, the choice is wholly dependent upon your preference. Grip tape is not only beneficial if you skate on ramps, ride with four wheels off the ground or perform tricks and flips while skateboarding, instead grip tape shall enhance your grip on the board regardless of your skateboarding style and in turn will enable you to ride well. Buy skateboard grip tape! Have a better grip on the board!

John asked:

Choosing The Right Skateboard Retailer

Skateboard retailers are everywhere. However, not all of them may sell the things you need at the right quality and price. When you can’t look for the perfect skateboard at one shop, you can always scour the market for more skateboard choices. You wouldn’t want to settle less for the price you have to pay.

Here are some helpful tips in your search for the perfect skateboard retailer.

Know The Seller

Most credible skateboard sellers have come a long way in their profession. This means that you should try to find out how long they have been in such business. If they have operated for quite some time already, it must mean that they are keeping their customers happy. However, you can always try several skateboard sellers on the market. You shouldn’t just stick to one option when scouting for retailers.

Knowledge In The Business

Good sellers know their business very well. When asked about something, they should be able to provide customers some answers. Accurate information is very important when buying skateboards. They should offer you the basics of a product and should present various choices of skateboards and its accessories.

The Right Price

If you feel you can’t afford the price of the products, you are always free to walk away. You can search for more sellers and find someone who can give you quality products at an affordable price. You can always keep their business cards and decide about the purchase at a later time.

The Services Offered

A particular skateboard shop should offer special services to its consumers. It is good to shop on a skateboard retailer who can customize items for you. It would also be a good idea to shop on a store where replacement parts for the items you purchased are available. Special promos, discount prices, and other amenities should be offered by the seller to maintain happy customers.

Your Own Preferences

Your preferences and comfort are very important when scouting for skateboard retailers. You must be happy with the services of a particular shop so you can be comfortable dealing with them. Remember, skateboarding can be a sport done forever. So it is only vital to maintain a good relationship with your retailers.

Making Comparisons

When shopping for skateboards, remember to compare prices. Some shops may offer lesser price for the same items. There are plenty of options to choose around in the internet. It is important to save much time for the search of skateboard retailers so you can guarantee quality purchases.

Policies

Make sure that you understand the policies set by the seller. Some shops offer money back guarantees for items which you find unsatisfactory. You can always choose shop with warranties and money-back return policies to ensure that you do not waste money on something which you do not really like.

Robert McEwan asked:

If you are interested in skateboarding, you are eventually going to have to buy a skateboard. It is usually a good idea to talk to people you know who already skateboard to see what they like and do not like about certain brands. Chances are you will be given the opportunity to try out your friends’ skateboards if you ask them. This will give you a good idea as to what your own personal preferences are for skateboards.

The board part of the skateboard is called the deck and it is usually made of plywood. You can also find cheaper skateboards that are made of plastic. Plastic skateboards are all right to start out with, but if you really love skateboarding you will want to buy a wooden, fiberglass or carbon board as these will last longer, however they will cost you more too. The average skateboard is eight inches wide, but you can get wider boards that make it easier to learn how to skateboard. The wider the board, the more stable it becomes. However wider boards make skateboard tricks more difficult. If you want to be able to rotate a board, you will want one that is 8 inches wide or less.

Your skateboard should come with a sandpaper-like material glued to the surface of the board. This is called griptape, and its entire purpose is to help your shoes grip onto the board as you skate. You will be able to buy the griptape from the skateboard shop that you buy your skateboard from. It comes in various sizes and can be cut down to the correct size for your board. Your griptape needs to be replaced periodically as it wears off the more that you use the skateboard.

Most skateboards have raised nose tail and sides, which is called the concave. The deeper the concave is, the more dramatic tricks can be achieved by the skater. If you are an aggressive skater, you will want a deeper concave. Beginning skaters will need a shallow concave until they really learn how to skate and then can move on to a board with a deeper concave.

The wheels on your skateboard are made of hard plastic, though you can still find old models that have metal wheels, however the metal is not recommended. The plastic wheels are made in different sizes and hardness. The most common level of hardness is one that is 90a. The harder the wheel is, the more pop you can get out of them. Pro skateboarders use wheels with 100a hardness. 97a hardness is good for ramp riding and skateboard parks. The smaller the wheels are in diameter the easier it is for you to perform some skateboard tricks. Smaller wheels will put your skateboard lower to the ground, but when you are starting out you want to have the larger wheels.

Do not get stuck on name brands! You can buy blank boards that have no brand names on them at all. It does not mean that they are bad boards, in fact, many skaters prefer the blank boards to the name brands. You can then customize the skateboard anyway that you would like to and the price is much less than you would pay for a brand name board.
